About This Project:

This graceful timber frame pavilion was designed as a thoughtful, seamless extension of a stately brick residence. The primary goal was to create a substantial, all-weather outdoor room that smartly navigated the home's existing architecture, making the addition feel as if it were part of the original design.

Achieving this integration required several creative solutions. The pavilion's gable pitch was intentionally designed to be shallower than the main rooflines, a critical choice to preserve the light and view from a second-story window directly above. The lower pitch is also cozier and functions better as shelter than a steep gable would. Below, the structural design cleverly transforms challenge into feature. Radius-tapered timber posts are strategically placed to coincide with the existing home's awkward corners, anchoring the structure and making their placement feel purposeful and fully resolved.

The resulting space is a sophisticated outdoor sanctuary, defined by its complex, gently arched timber trusses. The warm Douglas Fir provides a rich, natural tone to complement the home's brick facade, creating a protected haven for dining and entertaining. Most importantly, the open gable design perfectly frames the property's exceptional views, elevating the simple patio into a premier destination.
